The program to assist farmers harvest fresh sugarcane to reduce PM 2.5 dust in the production season 2020/2021 and 2021/2022: The Thai government has determined that the problem of small particulate matter (PM 2.5) is an important environmental issue that affects the air quality and the health and hygiene of Thai people. (...) In the past years, the amount of burnt sugarcane was around 70% of the total sugarcane production, which is one of the causes for PM 2.5 emissions during the harvesting period. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a program to reduce the burning of sugarcane. (...) The assistance program is a Green Box support program, more specifically an environmental program that falls under Paragraph 12 of Annex 2 of the Agreement on Agriculture.

Environmental programmes: Family Livestock and Climate Change Programme (GFCC). The GFCC's objective is to help build the adaptive capacity and resilience of family livestock producers facing climate variability and change in the Sierras del Este and Basalto Superficial areas. The soil in these areas is shallow and extremely prone to drought and water scarcity. The GFCC focuses on three specific components or goals: (a) promoting climate change adaptation strategies at the individual or producer group level by partially funding investments made to improve the basic infrastructure required on farms to reduce production system sensitivity (infrastructure for accessing and distributing water, shade provision for livestock, and subdivisions to ensure proper grazing management, etc.); (b) strengthening organizational capacities and local networks to foster resilience, which involves promoting capacity development at the local level to address climate change concerns in the short, medium and long term, (...).
