Electricity generation comes from a mix of publicly and privately-owned power plants. In addition to the main generators which generate the most electricity (Table 4.8), as at 1 January 2018, there were about 184 small hydroelectric power plants, with a total installed capacity of about 357.7 MW, which, in 2017, generated about 862 GWh. In addition, there are two wind farms in operation (total capacity 2.85 MW), four solar photovoltaic plants (total capacity of 2.48 MW with an additional 7.52 MW for which licenses have been issued and constructed expected), and one biogas plant.

The Government, with the support of the private sector and donor partners, has launched five renewable projects, which are now in the completion stage. Another two are about to be built. UNELCO has sought alternative sources to supplement its traditional means of power supply source, including using coconut oil. In Luganville, hydropower generates up to 84% of power during the rainy season. The VUI provided micro-solar installations to over 155 off-grid households, and maintains these facilities at zero cost to the users.

After 2011, labour disputes within the CPG (Gafsa Phosphate Company) resulted in a sharp fall in production. The CPG/GCT (Gafsa Phosphate Company/Tunisian Chemical Group) group is encountering serious environmental problems and its tailings do not meet the requirements of the Tunisian or international legislative framework on the protection of the environment, in particular of the marine ecosystems into which the waste is released; upgrading measures are apparently being taken to improve the situation.
