As a key industry in the Solomon Islands economy, the issue of fisheries subsidies is of considerable importance in Solomon Islands' engagement in the multilateral trading regime. As such, Solomon Islands considers excessive subsidisation by distant water fishing nations of their fisheries sectors as a key contributor to overfishing, with the resulting environmental and economic damage, as well as acting as a distortion to global fishing trade. Solomon Islands continues to argue that current WTO disciplines need to be strengthened and that certain forms of subsidies which contribute to overfishing and overcapacity should be curtailed.

The importation of merchandise into the country includes an original commercial invoice with the shipper's letter head, stamp and signature. An attestation from the Chamber of Commerce must also accompany the cargo. All goods contained in the invoice must be identified by their HS Code which, in practice, implies that only authorized agents can clear consignments with the GCA. Emphasis was placed to protect the domestic market from products that are hazardous, non-compliant with standardized health norms and those found in violation of intellectual property rights.

The trade advisory committee system, substantially broadened and reformed, consists of 28 advisory committees, with a total membership of approximately 700 advisors. Advisory committee members represent the full span of interests including manufacturing; agriculture; digital trade; intellectual property; services; small businesses; labor; environmental, consumer, and public health organizations; and state and local governments. The system is arranged in three tiers: the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations (ACTPN); five Policy Advisory Committees dealing with environment, labor, agriculture, Africa, and state and local issues; and 22 technical advisory committees in the areas of industry and agriculture.
