1. The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) regulates international trade in Australian native species, live animals and plants, and species listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The Biosecurity Act 2015 applies controls to the importation of all plants, parts of plants and plant products, all animals (including birds, fish and insects), animal products, soil and other items of general quarantine concern.

Measure description Coverage of the measure
Emergency measures for specific sea freight consignments of containerised and break bulk cargoes for Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs from all ports in Europe which load cargo manufactured or stored in Italy.
The recommended treatments for BMSB are as follows: Sulfuryl fluoride; Methyl bromide; Heat – 50 °C or greater for at least 20 minutes.
Sea freight consignments of containerised and break bulk cargo from all ports in Europe which load cargo manufactured or stored in Italy. All containerised and break bulk new and used vehicles, vessels, high risk machinery and parts from all ports in Europe which load cargoes manufactured or stored in Italy after the commencement of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) infestation season. The requirements apply to target goods with a documented loading date in Italy between 1 September 2017 and 30 April 2018 inclusive

The document outlines proposed changes to the Gene Technology Regulations 2001 which will clarify the classification of organisms that have been modified through the use of certain new technologies (two site directed nuclease techniques, oligo-directed mutagenesis and some RNA interference techniques) . These changes will clarify which organisms will be required to be regulated as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Australia. They will also identify some organisms which will not require regulation as GMOs in Australia.
