By respecting greening practices, farmers contribute to long-term competitiveness and for an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable way of managing their farms. The greening payment is therefore a new element of the EU's response to the global challenge of sustainable management of natural resources and climate action which is of particular importance to agriculture.
On top of these mandatory instruments, agri-environmental policy encourages the introduction and/or maintenance of extensive, environmentally friendly farming systems programmed and targeted towards regional needs. These instruments will be accompanied by broad support from the Farm Advisory System and applied research.

To support programmes on agri-environment and climate change

To promote the compliance with rules in relation to the environment, public health, animal health, plant health and animal welfare

To conserve or improve the environment, to maintain the countryside, to preserve the potential for tourism or to protect the coastline

To support organic farming

To assist developing countries in adapting to climate change and in moving to low-carbon strategies

To protect human life or health and the environment by prohibiting/restrincting the import and export of hazardous chemicals
