Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) Grants
The FRDC was formed as a statutory corporation on 2 July 1991 under the Primary Industries Research and Development Act 1989 (PIRD Act). The Act permits funding and administration of research and development relating to primary industries with a view to:
(i) increasing the economic, environmental and social benefits to members of primary industries and to the community in general by improving the production, processing, storage, transport or marketing of the products of primary industries;
(ii) achieving the sustainable use and sustainable management of natural resources;
(iii) making more effective use of the resources and skills of the community in general and the scientific community in particular;
(iv) supporting the development of scientific and technical capacity;
(v) developing the adoptive capacity of primary producers; and
(vi) improving accountability for expenditure on research and development activities in relation to primary industries.

Background: Changing worldwide trends of increasing environmental concern about the state of fisheries and the potential impact of market access led the WA Cabinet to facilitate independent third party certification of WA's commercial fisheries. In 2012 the WA Cabinet approved the initiative, and allocated $14. 5 m for the project.

For pre-assessments the subsidy is provided to the Conformity Assessment Bodies (CAB) on the approval of the Department.
For full-assessments, the subsidy is provided to the CAB on the approval of the fishery client and the Department.

Small-scale fishermen's organizations legally established in Chile that submit projects
As a general rule, the FAP finances:
a. fisheries and aquaculture research projects;
b. programmes for the monitoring, control and management of fisheries activities;
c. programmes and projects for the promotion and development of small-scale fisheries;
d. workforce reintegration programme for former industry workers;
e. training activities for both current and former fishing industry workers;
f. high-level technical study programmes for both current and former fishing industry workers;
g. social support programmes for former workers of the extractive or processing fishing industry;
h. projects for research into and restoration of the habitat of hydrobiological species of significance to recreational fishing, and programmes for the promotion, dissemination, management, monitoring and control of this activity;
i. programmes and projects promoting the consumption of hydrobiological resources; and
j. fisheries recovery programmes for small-scale fishermen, crews of special vessels and factory workers.
