Importing fresh cut flowers and foliage into…
Importing fresh cut flowers and foliage into Australia safely
As part of the ongoing systematic review of Australia's import conditions for cut flower and foliage imports from all countries, a high detection rate of invertebrate pests was determined. Australia is amending import conditions for cut flowers and foliage exported to Australia to require that consignments are accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate verifying that they are free of live quarantine pests. The amended conditions will also require goods to be shipped in insect-proof packaging and labelled with the scientific name of the plant species. Certain species will require a devitalisation treatment to prevent propagation.
Environment related objective
To avoid the introduction of live invertebrate pests on imported cut flowers and foliage including thrips, aphids and mites in Australia
Thrips are the primary vectors of tospoviruses, many of which are also quarantine pests for Australia. The ongoing high number of live pests detected on imported cut flowers poses a level of phytosanitary risk that exceeds Australia's appropriate level of protection

Updating Gene Technology Regulation in Australia …
Updating Gene Technology Regulation in Australia - Regulation Impact Statement for consultation
The document outlines proposed changes to the Gene Technology Regulations 2001 which will clarify the classification of organisms that have been modified through the use of certain new technologies (two site directed nuclease techniques, oligo-directed mutagenesis and some RNA interference techniques). These changes will clarify which organisms will be required to be regulated as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Australia. They will also identify some organisms which will not require regulation as GMOs in Australia.
Environment related objective
To protect the environment through clarification of the classification of organisms that have been modified and are consequnetly required to be regulated as GMOs

Directive D-12-01 Phytosanitary requirements to prevent the introduction of plants regulated as pests in Canada
A pest risk analysis was conducted for Arundo donax. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) determined that it poses a significant risk to Canada's plant resource base. Based on this analysis and on feedback received from Canadian stakeholders, the CFIA is planning to regulate Arundo donax as a quarantine pest under the Plant Protection Act. Intentional importation of this species is prohibited. To prevent non-intentional (contaminants) imports, all commodities to be imported into Canada are required to be free from propagative parts of Arundo donax
Environment related objective
To protect the environment by prohibiting the intentional (or unintantional) importation of Arundo donax, considered a quarantine pest of significant risk to Canada's plan resource base
