The National Maritime Port Policy was launched in 2006 with the aim of modernizing the ports and adapting them to ensure greater protection of the environment and maritime areas and increased efficiency.

The Government is committed to combat climate change and to mitigate its negative impacts, and is ready to integrate its rain forest in a global carbon credit scheme within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), specifically under the proposed REDD mechanism (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation).

Under the Trade Act, export licensing is required for hides and skins, feathers, bird skins with feathers, prepared feathers, ornamental feathers, and other feather articles with the objective to ensure environmental safeguards for wildlife.

Under the Customs Act, an environmental tax is levied on every unit of non-returnable metal, plastic, glass or cardboard container of any alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage imported into Guyana.

Under the VAT Act, zero rating is offered to certain agricultural inputs, including equipment or components used in the generation of renewable energy in the agriculture sector using agricultural by-products.

The Government is pursuing private investments in alternative energy in the areas of biofuels, hydropower, and solar power.
