The EC’s enterprise and industrial policy is giving increasing attention into fostering consistency with energy and environmental policies.

Launching of a new 2007 strategy for automotive industry, aimed at keeping the industry viable on a long-term basis through, inter alia, cutting CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020, through technological improvements and use of bio-fuels, and investing in R&D, mainly in clean renewable fuels.

The "European green cars initiative" was adopted on November 2008 with the aim to achieve a breakthrough in the use of renewable and non-polluting energy sources by, inter alia, providing loans to car companies and their suppliers to finance innovation in clean technologies and better environmental performance.

The new regulatory framework for chemicals called REACH (registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemicals) entered into force on 1 June 2007 with the aim to secure a high level of protection for human health and the environment.

The EC is in the process of elaborating a new basic metals policy in order to, inter alia, allow the subsector to meet the EC's environmental objectives and to adapt to the requirements of its climate change goals.

The Integrated Maritime Policy, welcomed by the European Council on 14 December 2007, is aimed inter alia at enhancing Europe's capacity to face the challenges of climate change, degradation of the marine environment, maritime safety and security, and energy security and sustainability.

During the first year of its implementation, a good number of major new initiatives have been put in place in areas as varied as sustainable tourism, and climate change.

Following the 2001 White Paper "European transport policy for 2010: time to decide", about 30 measures aimed at making freight transport more efficient and sustainable were adopted on October 2007.

The Commission coordinates the EC's point of view in the International Maritime Organization (IMO), while the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) provides the Commission and Member States with scientific and technical support relating to legislation for maritime safety, pollution prevention, and pollution response.

One of the key performance targets of the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) is to reduce by 10% the environmental impact per flight.
