Situated in the south western Indian Ocean, 350 km from the south east coast of Africa, Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, with an area of 587,041 km2 and an estimated population of 23 million in 2010. As well as biological diversity and an exceptionally high rate of endemism (80% for its fauna and 90% for its flora), it has a very rich subsoil containing various minerals.

Provided that appropriate policies are introduced, the manufacturing sector offers exceptional opportunities, especially in the agrifood and handicrafts areas, because of Madagascar’s abundant flora and fauna, its rich waters and the wealth of Malagasy know-how. (...)
