Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for refrigerators were introduced in 2011. Only refrigerators that meet the prescribed MEPS are permitted to be sold in Singapore. MEPS helps to prevent consumers from becoming locked into high energy consumption and costs over the lifespan of the appliance.
Environment related objective
For the purposes of environmental protection and energy conservation.

Rationale: The refrigerator is one of the most energy -intensive appliances in homes, accounting for about 18% of the total household electricity consumption. The revised MEPS will reduce energy consumption and result in lower emissions of greenhouse gases. Consumers also reap life cycle cost saving s due to the reduction in energy use over the lifespan of the appliance.
