The EC is in the process of elaborating a new basic metals policy in order to, inter alia, allow the subsector to meet the EC's environmental objectives and to adapt to the requirements of its climate change goals.

The Integrated Maritime Policy, welcomed by the European Council on 14 December 2007, is aimed inter alia at enhancing Europe's capacity to face the challenges of climate change, degradation of the marine environment, maritime safety and security, and energy security and sustainability.

One of the key performance targets of the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) is to reduce by 10% the environmental impact per flight.

Local tourism activities aimed at, inter alia, environmental protection benefit from financial support through various EC programmes.
