The Cohesion Policy programmes support, during 2007-2013 energy efficiency and renewable energy measures as well as other energy-related programmes such as: Altener (promotion of renewable energy sources); Save (promotion of energy efficiency); Sure (safe transport of radioactive materials).

In line with the FAO's international plan of action to fight illegal unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU), the Council adopted in September 2008 a "Community system to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing" intended to halt the import of fisheries products stemming from IUU fishing activities into the Community market and targeted primarily at activities falling under the definition of IUU fishing and causing serious damage to the marine environment, the sustainability of fish stocks and the socio-economic situation of fishermen abiding by the rules on conservation and management of fisheries resources.

The Community Fisheries Control Agency, established in 2005, has the mandate of organizing coordination and cooperation between national control and inspection activities with the aim to, inter alia, assist recovery of depleted stocks and fighting IUU fishing activities.

On 1 January 2010, a new regulation is to enter into force to prevent, deter, and eliminate all trade in fishery products in the EC deriving from IUU fishing in all waters, and the involvement of Community nationals in IUU activities conducted under any flag.

The Financial Instrument of Fisheries Guidance (FIFG) supports the sustainable development and structural adjustment of the fisheries and aquaculture subsector.

In September 2008, the European Commission initiated a full review of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) with the aim of overhauling the institutional framework of EC fisheries management in order to ensure sustainable exploitation of resources.

The EC’s enterprise and industrial policy is giving increasing attention into fostering consistency with energy and environmental policies.

Launching of a new 2007 strategy for automotive industry, aimed at keeping the industry viable on a long-term basis through, inter alia, cutting CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020, through technological improvements and use of bio-fuels, and investing in R&D, mainly in clean renewable fuels.

The "European green cars initiative" was adopted on November 2008 with the aim to achieve a breakthrough in the use of renewable and non-polluting energy sources by, inter alia, providing loans to car companies and their suppliers to finance innovation in clean technologies and better environmental performance.

The new regulatory framework for chemicals called REACH (registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemicals) entered into force on 1 June 2007 with the aim to secure a high level of protection for human health and the environment.
