On 24 December 2020, the EU and the UK agreed the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement ("the Agreement") establishing a free trade area between the European Union and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland which replaces the previous trading arrangement from 1 January 2021.
The Agreement establishes a free trade area in goods between the United Kingdom and the European Union, within the meaning of Article XXIV:8(b) of the GATT 1994, and for trade in services, an agreement within the meaning of Article V of the GATS. Provisions on trade in goods include provisions on rules of origin, preferential tariffs and other restrictive regulations of commerce. It also includes commitments concerning trade in services, and also covers other aspects of the bilateral relationship, such as public procurement, aviation, energy , road transport, social security cooperation and law enforcement cooperation. |

The Agreement establishes a free trade area for trade in goods and services within the meaning of GATT 1994 Article XXIV and GATS Article V. The Free Trade Agreement between Iceland, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Kingdom of Norway and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the "Agreement") replaces the Agreement on Trade in Goods between Iceland, the Kingdom of Norway and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (see document series WT/REG430/N/1), which governs current trading arrangements between the United Kingdom and Iceland. The modernized Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aims to liberalize and facilitate trade in goods and services between the Parties in accordance with the provisions of this Agreement and replaces the 1992-FTA between the Parties. The FTA consists of 10 Chapters and 21 Annexes and contains the areas of elimination of tariffs and non-tariff barriers, rules of origin, trade facilitation, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, trade remedies, trade in services, intellectual property rights, competition, trade and sustainable development, institutional provisions and dispute settlement. (...) Trade in basic agricultural products is covered in three bilateral agricultural agreements between each European Free Trade Association (EFTA) state and Turkey. These agreements are still in force, the bilateral agriculture agreement between Switzerland and Turkey has been replaced by a new bilateral agreement which expands the existing concessions. The Services Chapter (...) covers trade in all services sectors under all four modes of supply. Separate annexes on recognition of qualifications of service suppliers (Annex X), movement of natural persons supplying services (Annex XI), electronic commerce (Annex XIII), telecommunication services (Annex XVI), co-productions (Annex XV), financial services (Annex XVI), health services (Annex XVII, not applicable to Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), tourism and travel services (Annex XVII) and international road transport and logistics services (Annex XIX) complement the chapter with additional disciplines specific to those sectors.
