To enhance the government's environmental agenda.
The objectives of the AIF are to build automotive research and development (R&D) capacity in Canada and secure knowledge-based jobs; enhance the government's science and technology and environmental agendas; support the development and/or implementation of innovative, fuel efficient technologies or processes; and, promote long-term economic benefit to Canada including significant job creation/retention.

To protect the environment.
The program is designed to improve the quality of life for Canadians through investments that enhance the quality of the environment, support long term economic growth, enhance community infrastructure and build 21st century infrastructure using new approaches and best technologies.

To build genomics research capacity in key areas such as environment, fisheries and forestry.
The objective of Genome Canada is to build genomics research capacity in Canada and position Canadian researchers for global leadership. Genome Canada provides funding to six regional Genome Centres across the country. Together with these six Genome Centres, and other partners, Genome Canada supports large-scale research projects in key selected areas such as agriculture, environment, fisheries, forestry, health and new technology development. In addition, Genome Canada is active in addressing public concerns and increasing public awareness about genomics researching including ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social issues related to genomics.

To promote sustainable use of lands and management of resources.
The objective of the program is to promote the economic development of the North, in order to strengthen territorial economies and increase participation by Northerners. Investments in regional development will support the goals of: increasing the participation of Aboriginal people and Northerners in the economy (The Economy); promoting the sustainable use of lands and management of resources by First Nations, Inuit and Northerners (The Land); and building sustainable northern communities (The People). SINED focuses in meeting the following objectives under four key areas of growth: a) Building the Knowledge Base, b) Economic Infrastructure, c) Developing Capacity, d) Economic Diversification.

The objective was to provide funding support for strategic research and development, and innovative projects that were expected to produce economic, social and environmental benefits to Canadians.

To regulate aboriginal fisheries.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) launched the Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy (AFS) in 1992, the object of which was to provide a framework for regulation of Aboriginal peoples' right to fish for food, social and ceremonial purposes. The AFS is not rights-based, but rather, as a matter of policy seeks the effective management and regulation of Aboriginal fisheries through negotiated agreements.

To promote environmentally sustainable commercial fishery.
The objective of AICFI is to assist Mi'kmaq and Maliseet First Nations (MMFNs) in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and the Gaspé Region of Québec, in the development of sound Fisheries Management and Governance practices for their commercial fishing enterprises moving towards an economically and environmentally sustainable integrated commercial fishery.

To maintain healthy lobster stocks.
To assist Canada's lobster fishery ensure its long-term sustainability and economic prosperity. The program supports industry efforts to maintain healthy lobster stocks in all lobster fishing areas and improve lobster abundance in areas where stocks have declined.

To promote sustainable fisheries.
The objective of PICFI is to achieve a fair, sustainable, integrated commercial fishery on Canada's west coast, in which all commercial participants fish under common and transparent rules. One of the key pillars to support this objective is to address First Nations interests in increasing their participation in commercial fisheries. It also supports higher standards of accountability for all resource users, through enhanced fisheries monitoring and report and strengthened collaboration, and enhanced cooperation amongst fisheries interests.

To promote renewable energies.
The Investments in Forest Industry Transformation Program provides targeted investments for projects that implement new technologies leading to non-traditional high-value forest products and renewable energies.
