Importation of captive non-human primates - Review of import conditions
A final report on a risk assessment of the animal and human health risks associated with imported captive non-human primates. Importation of captive non-human primates will be permitted subject to biosecurity legislation, and the application of sanitary measures. The report identifies and categorizes hazards of biosecurity concern associated with the importation of captive non-human primates and includes a review of disease agents.

Biosecurity Advice 2017/07
As set out in the Biosecurity Advice, Australia's Director of Biosecurity is conducting a review of Australia's import requirements for prawns and prawn products for human consumption from all countries. The review will identify and categorise hazards of biosecurity concern associated with the importation of these products, including undertaking risk assessments of disease agents as required.

Trading partners will be informed of the release of the draft report and will have the opportunity to provide comment.

Emergency measures for specific sea freight consignments of containerised and break bulk cargoes for Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs from all ports in Europe which load cargo manufactured or stored in Italy.
The recommended treatments for BMSB are as follows: Sulfuryl fluoride; Methyl bromide; Heat – 50 °C or greater for at least 20 minutes.

Importing fresh cut flowers and foliage into Australia safely
As part of the ongoing systematic review of Australia's import conditions for cut flower and foliage imports from all countries, a high detection rate of invertebrate pests was determined. Australia is amending import conditions for cut flowers and foliage exported to Australia to require that consignments are accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate verifying that they are free of live quarantine pests. The amended conditions will also require goods to be shipped in insect-proof packaging and labelled with the scientific name of the plant species. Certain species will require a devitalisation treatment to prevent propagation.

Exposure draft Biosecurity Amendment (Miscellaneous Measures)
The Australian Government, through the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, has commenced consultation on an exposure draft of the Biosecurity Amendment (Miscellaneous Measures) Bill 2017 (the Bill).
The Bill makes amendments to the Biosecurity Act 2015 to enhance operation of Australia's biosecurity framework. The measures included in the Bill will:
• enhance information gathering powers to assist in the management of biosecurity risk;
• make minor and technical amendments to improve administration of the Biosecurity Act 2015 by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources and the Department of Health;
• provide an improved ability to amend legislated biosecurity import conditions in response to changing biosecurity risk.

Updating Gene Technology Regulation in Australia - Regulation Impact Statement for consultation
The document outlines proposed changes to the Gene Technology Regulations 2001 which will clarify the classification of organisms that have been modified through the use of certain new technologies (two site directed nuclease techniques, oligo-directed mutagenesis and some RNA interference techniques). These changes will clarify which organisms will be required to be regulated as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Australia. They will also identify some organisms which will not require regulation as GMOs in Australia.

Regulation No. 7/2007/CM/UEMOA on the health safety of plants, animals and foods of 6 April 2007
The notified Regulation aims to establish the general principles and organizational provisions and procedures for ensuring the health safety of plants, animals and foods at both community and national level. It establishes health safety cooperation mechanisms and entities within the Union, and applies at all stages of the production, processing and distribution of marketed plants, animals and foods.

Draft Resolution no. 284, 13 January 2017

Phytosanitary import requirements for non-processed wood and other wooden products, bamboo and bamboo products, originating from all areas other than the continental United States
Based on previously established harmonized regulations of certain forestry pests and applicable specific pest directives, the continental United States is exempt from this revised directive.
