The Steel Transformation Plan (STP)

On 21 December 2011, the Government announced that it would provide BlueScope Steel with a competitiveness assistance advance of $100 million under the STP Payment of the competitiveness assistance advance to BlueScope Steel was made on 18 January 2012.

On 30 January 2012, the Government announced that it would provide Arrium (then known as OneSteel) with a competitiveness assistance advance of $64 million under the STP. Payment of the competitiveness assistance advance to Arrium was made on 6 February 2012.
Environment related objective
To assist the steel manufacturing industry to transform into an efficient and economically sustainable industry in a low carbon economy;

Under the agreement, BlueScope used the advance to build competitiveness by investing in research and development; undertaking a number of environmental improvement projects; maintaining equipment to ensure optimum performance, and operations restructure.

Arrium used the funds to maximise productivity and reduce and improve its environmental performance by investing in waste reduction, reuse and recycling; vital repair and maintenance; and targeted skills training for employees.

The Beyond Waste Fund was set up by the Victorian Environment Protection Authority in 2010 to deliver waste reduction targets set under the Towards Zero Waste policy and to address the impact of landfill levy increase on the Commercial & Industrial and Construction & Demolition sectors. The Beyond Waste Fund transferred to Sustainability Victoria in June 2012.
The Beyond Waste Fund was limited to one round of funding, and was open to all Victorian organisations that generate and dispose of Commercial & Industrial and Construction & Demolition waste. Sector and industry groups, consultants and research bodies in these sectors were also eligible to apply.
