Government TPR WT/TPR/G/349 G-III§12 Solomon Islands 2016 Trade Policy Framework
Relevant information
As a key industry in the Solomon Islands economy, the issue of fisheries subsidies is of considerable importance in Solomon Islands' engagement in the multilateral trading regime. As such, Solomon Islands considers excessive subsidisation by distant water fishing nations of their fisheries sectors as a key contributor to overfishing, with the resulting environmental and economic damage, as well as acting as a distortion to global fishing trade. Solomon Islands continues to argue that current WTO disciplines need to be strengthened and that certain forms of subsidies which contribute to overfishing and overcapacity should be curtailed.

The importation of merchandise into the country includes an original commercial invoice with the shipper's letter head, stamp and signature. An attestation from the Chamber of Commerce must also accompany the cargo. All goods contained in the invoice must be identified by their HS Code which, in practice, implies that only authorized agents can clear consignments with the GCA. Emphasis was placed to protect the domestic market from products that are hazardous, non-compliant with standardized health norms and those found in violation of intellectual property rights.

Relevant information
Our energy transition policy is to become a nuclear-free homeland and raise the proportion of renewable energy generation to 20% by 2025. Based on the precondition of stable energy supply, we anticipate that the remaining 80% of the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu's energy will be generated by thermal power plants. To accomplish this, we aim to increase power generation by natural gas-fired plants to 50% and reduce power generation by coal-fired plants to 30%. We are planning to actively develop renewable energy, including solar, wind and geothermal energy. In the meantime, we are promoting conservation to maximize energy efficiency. We are also hastening construction of the new LNG receiving station to increase imports of natural gas, contributing to the decrease of pollution and carbon emissions attributed to thermal plants.
