  Under the Law on Technological Industrial Development Zones, the TIDZs are established with a view to the development of modern technologies and efficient resource utilization by applying high environmental standards.

(...) the links between trade and the environment are increasingly close and offer a growing number of opportunities to forge virtuous and complementary ties. Both the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Climate Change Agreement have set the scene for trade to play a more prominent role in tackling climate change challenges. Costa Rica is of the view that there is enormous potential for expanding collaboration between the trade and environment communities so that both can work together and in a mutually beneficial manner.

In the negotiations in CTESS, Japan has been committed to revising its list of environmental goods.

The work to provide social access to drinking water for only US$50 will continue in the areas covered by the scheme. There are also plans to construct a modular water treatment plant in Kinshasa capable of handling 330,000 m3/day. The first of the three planned modules will have a capacity of 110,000 m3/day.

Through the imposition of heavy fines or criminal sanctions as the main penalties and supplemented with other management actions such as suspension and revocation of fishing licenses, forfeiture of catch, fishing gear and fishing vessels, and clear requirements for the violating vessel to stop fishing and return to a designated port within a given timeframe, as well as imposing additional sanctions to recidivism, the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu has succeeded in implementing stronger actions on deterring IUU fishing activities.

In addition, since mid-2010, Switzerland and EFTA countries have proposed to all their negotiating partners the inclusion of special provisions on trade and sustainable development.

Similarly MERCOSUR is developing an Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme for Domestic Appliances with support from the German National Institute of Metrology. The aim is to enhance quality assurance infrastructure for evaluating the energy capacity of domestic appliances and to build consumer confidence by developing awareness around efficiency labelling. At national level the project is coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and involves the institutions that are part of the National Quality System.

The EU has been playing a major role in the fight against climate change, actively supporting the climate change negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to agree on a new post-Kyoto climate regime at the international level and strengthening its Emission Trading System (EU ETS) domestically in order to meet aggressive carbon reduction targets.
