Amendments were made in 2013 to the Law on Radiation , which clarified a number of provisions related to nuclear and radioactive material/equipment. In particular, the amendments prohibited the importation of certain goods (food, feed, toys, jewellery and cosmetics) to which radioactive substances have been added.

Transporting waste outside Iceland is not permitted. Iceland prohibits the export of wastes except under certain conditions. For hazardous wastes and the removal of waste for recovery, an export licence is required from the Environment Agency of Iceland.

With regard to genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Iceland has implemented the EU Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of GMOs into the environment. EU Regulations (EC) Nos. 1829/2003 and 1830/2003 on the marketing, labelling and traceability of genetically modified food and feed have not been incorporated into Icelandic legislation. Regulation No. 1237/2014 on traceability and labelling of GM food and GM feed applies to food and feed when more than 0.9% of each ingredient is produced from GMOs.
